Drug Treatment Courts in Westchester County

Drug Crimes Lawyer Serving all of New York

The city courts of Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains, and Yonkers were recently re-designated as “hub courts.” This new designation will make drug treatment courts accessible to individuals and veterans who have pending cases in Westchester County and who also suffer from co-occurring disorders, alcoholism, and drug dependency.

Veteran Treatment Track Designation

The Veteran Treatment Tracks are based on a drug court model that combines rigorous treatment, intensive judicial monitoring, coordinated services, and enhanced communication methods. The city courts of Mt. Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains, Yonkers and the Westchester County Judicial Diversion Court are now designated as Veteran Treatment Tracks.

The new Veteran Treatment Tracks will provide a range of support services for:

  • Substance Abuse
  • PTSD
  • Combat Related Disorders
  • Unemployment
  • Homelessness

To help ensure the success of participants, these courts incorporate and utilize peer mentors and veteran volunteers to offer participants support and motivation as they navigate the challenges of re-assimilating to civilian life.

Westchester County Drug Court Enhancement Project

The Westchester County Drug Court Enhancement Project, under the direction of Ninth Judicial District, will coordinate the efforts of Westchester County drug court programs currently operating in Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, White Plains and Yonkers.

The new drug court initiative will focus on the unique needs of people who have opioid use disorders, as well as justice-involved military veterans. This project is funded by a federal grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

The goal of The Westchester County Drug Court Enhancement Project is to enhance the delivery of clinical services to the previously mentioned target populations. A provision allowing medication-assisted treatment (MAT), is also available to Westchester County Drug Treatment Court participants. In addition to traditional forms of treatment, the use of MAT has been shown to improve outcomes for individuals with an opioid addiction. Interestingly, about 50% of those enrolled in the county’s drug treatment courts suffer from opioid addiction.

A substantial grant from SAMSHA grant will be used to support personnel, training, and other needs related to helping military veterans enrolled in the County’s drug treatment court programs. The grant will also fund an evaluation study of the County’s treatment/veterans court programs. The initiative begins in October after the SAMSHA funds have been distributed to the District.
