An off-duty NYPD officer was killed when a driver who was DWI hit him, authorities said.
The 25-year-old officer was driving on the Southern State Parkway on Long Island early Sunday when he was rear-ended by another vehicle
After the driver who was DWI hit the off duty officer's vehicle, he hit another vehicle, cops said. But the other driver survived the crash.
After the hard impact, the car hit a guardrail, flipped over and rolled down into the woods alongside the highway unable for anyone to see where the vehicle was. The other passenger crawled from the wreckage to flag down help. The victim was brought in for emergency surgery but died of a severe head injury and loss of blood.
The passenger suffered minor injuries, as did the driver of the third car.
The 20-year-old was charged with vehicular manslaughter, DWI, reckless driving and two counts of assault. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday and was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail, authorities said.
