Driver Charged With DWI

An alleged drunken driver was arrested following a foot chase by police officers on Monday night. 

A 38-year-old driver was pulled over for driving and talking on a cell phone but he drove away as the officer approached his vehicle, police said. The officer followed him.  He stopped, got out of his vehicle and began to run away. The officer caught him shortly after but police said the suspect struggled in an attempt to avoid being arrested.

The accused has three prior convictions for DWI, was driving with a suspended driver's license and was driving without an ignition interlock device, police said.

He was charged with DWI, driving without a license, unlawfully fleeing a police officer, resisting arrest, reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle without an interlock device and 21 other traffic violations.

He was arraigned in Long Beach City Court and is due back in court Thursday.
