Driver Charged with DWI in West Hempstead

Nassau County police said that a 21-year-old West Hempstead man was arrested for DWI after he was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run crash Saturday morning.
Kelvin Anorue was driving westbound on Hempstead Tpk. when officers stopped him for driving erratically. They then found the driver to be under the influence of alcohol, police said.
During that traffic stop officers learned the driver was involved in an earlier accident but fled the scene, police said. Anorue stole a cell phone from a 51-year-old man's pocket under threat of a weapon after the crash, police said.
Anorue was charged with robbery, DWI, leaving the scene of accident, unlicensed operation and numerous traffic violations. He will be arraigned Sunday at First District in Hempstead.
