A man suspected of killing a woman and her son in their home last week refused to waive extradition to New York during a court appearance in Maryland on Tuesday.
The suspect will stay in Maryland and but have another opportunity to waive extradition at a Jan. 27 hearing. New York State has filed a petition for his return but it could be 60 to 90 days before he is ordered back to Long Island.
The suspect is being held without bail.
Suffolk County police issued a warrant for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder.
