Man Arrested After Crash Injures Child

A Ronkonkoma man was arrested for DWAI by drugs after he was accused of causing an accident that seriously injured a boy on Saturday, Suffolk County police said.
The 30-year-old was driving on Sunrise Highway in Shirley when detectives say that he rear-ended a pickup truck causing the truck to leave the roadway and hit a tree.
The 5-year-old son of driver that was hit was critically injured and had to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center. The wife and other children inside the vehicle all treated for non-life threatening injuries.
The suspect refused medical treatment after the crash, and he was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs. He will be arraigned Sunday at First District Court in Central Islip.
