Cops: Homeowner's Camera Catches Squatter in Lake Mahopac Shed

Police said that a Yonkers man was found to be squatting inside a waterfront shed on Lake Mahopac for several months. He now faces a felony burglary charge after the suspicious homeowner set up video surveillance.

The owner of the Route 6N property had suspected that someone was using his shed, which is equipped with electricity, a refrigerator and a microwave oven, for an overnight residence, Chief Michael Johnson said. The homeowner then set up the surveillance camera and captured an image of the suspect, who was identified by Officer Michael Sheil as 41-year-old Ethan Themely of Yonkers, police said.  He had been using the shed as an overnight residence for several months.

Sheil and Sgt. Michael Nagle went into the shed around 2 a.m. Wednesday and woke up Themely then charged him with third-degree burglary, a felony, fourth-degree criminal mischief and criminal possession of a controlled substance, misdemeanors.

Themely was arraigned before Town Justice Tom Jacobellis, who sent him to the Putnam County jail in lieu of $1,000 bail. He is due back in Town Court on Sept. 25.
