Eight NJ longshoremen were arrested for helping Panamanian drug dealers smuggle cocaine into the country - getting $50,000 to $100,000 each for their help, prosecutors said Tuesday.
"The public places great trust in the longshoremen who work at our ports," U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said. "But their integrity is all that stands between our border and those who seek to bring contraband - and worse - into our country."
The probe also led investigators to also uncover a $7 million stock scam that used social networking sites to pump up the cost of stocks that were then "dumped" by the scammers for huge profits.
Twelve people, including another longshoreman, were arrested in that scam.
