A Long Island University museum director was sentenced today to 1-year in jail for stealing nine Egyptian artifacts and then selling them through a Christie's auction house.
The former director pleaded guilty at Central Islip federal court in December 2009.
The artifacts were more than 2,000 years old and were taken from the university's Hillwood Museum in Brookville.
Eight figurines that were sold for about $43,000 have since been returned. But the ninth artifact (sold to a collector in Germany) was not obligated to return it under that country's laws. He repaid the school $6,500 for it.
