Cops: Wrong-way Driver in Dix Hills Crash Was DWI

An off-duty NYC police officer was killed in a crash with a drunken driver traveling in the wrong direction on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills Monday, New York State police said.

The accused was driving westbound on the eastbound side of the parkway when he crashed near Exit 41. He hit a Honda Accord driven by Andre Menzies, a nine-year veteran of the department who was on his way home from his assignment at the Queens Housing Bureau, police said.

Menzies, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 50-year-old, of Brooklyn, was treated and released at Huntington Hospital.

The accused who submitted to a blood test, was charged with driving while intoxicated and reckless driving. He will be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip.
