A Mahopac man with two previous convictions for DWI faces his third drunken driving arrest after crashing his car then running into the woods to avoid police, the Carmel police said today.
A 28-year-old was arrested Sunday after crashing at Route 6N and Parker Drive, then running into the nearby woods, Chief Michael Johnson said. Officer Frank Chibbaro responded on a report of a vehicle beeping its horn but found an unoccupied car that had been in an accident. Another driver at the scene told Officer Chibbaro that the driver ran into the woods, police said.
Police took him into custody and he eventually admitted to being the driver of the car that had been in an accident, police said.
He was charged with DWI, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, felonies, being an unlicensed driver, leaving the scene of a property-damage accident and improper lane use, infractions, police said. His license was suspended due to a previous felony DWI conviction.
He was sent to the county jail in lieu of $10,000 bail and is due in Carmel Town Court on Dec. 6.
