Huntington Station woman became the sixth alleged DWI to be driving the wrong way on a Long Island roadway in less than one month. Nassau County police say Bernadette Behensky was caught driving on the eastbound side of Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow on Sunday.
She reportedly pleaded not guilty to DWI and other charges. Behensky was released on $1,000 bail and is due back in Nassau County court Friday.
The month-long string of alleged wrong-way drunken drivers started on Nov. 15 when an off-duty police officer was killed in a head-on collision in Dix Hills. The suspect in that case, Michael Bowen, is being held at Suffolk County jail on $1 million bail after he pleaded not guilty to vehicular manslaughter and other charges.
The next day, a Westbury woman was charged with DWI after she was accused of causing a head-on collision while driving the wrong way on the L.I.E. in North Hills.
On Dec. 3, a college administrator was arrested for DWI when the suspect was driving the wrong way on Sunrise Highway following a police chase.
Last week, two accused wrong-way drunken drivers were caught - one on the LIE in Yaphank on Wednesday and the other was caught on the Sunrise Highway in Shirley Thursday morning.
